Where do our dogs come from?

Our efforts are put into helping local dogs in need. Most of our dogs came right from shelters in RI or are owner surrendered due to divorce, foreclosure or some other circumstance preventing the owner from keeping their dog.

Can I visit with a dog that I saw on your website?

We do not maintain a shelter
. All of our dogs live in foster care within New England. Once your application is approved by a member of our team, we will contact you to arrange a home visit.

I have submitted an application and have not received a response yet?

We try to be as prompt as possible. Everyone associated with this rescue works full time and devotes their free time to whatever duties they are assigned. Everyday life gets in the way sometimes which may delay application processing and callbacks. Please be patient, we work very hard at what we do and also have foster dogs in our care that demand our attention.

What does the adoption fee cover?

Rescues have to charge a fee in order to keep pulling and vetting dogs. 100% of all money donated to Almost Home Rescue goes directly to the care of the dogs in our program and veterinary bills. All of our dogs go out neutered or spayed accordingly, heartworm tested, dewormed and vaccinated. We also provide you a bag of Artemis Dog food so you don’t have to worry about finding the brand your newly adopted dog has been eating during his/her stay with Almost Home Rescue. We do take dogs that have suffered from abuse and neglect; their medical needs can be quite costly. A portion of your adoption fee goes directly to another dog’s medical expenses.

I can’t keep my dog and I have to move tomorrow. Can I drop him/her off?

Unfortunately that is not enough time for us to help you. If you give us sufficient time, we will post your dog on our Facebook page and Petfinder to help spread the word. You will have to surrender your dog to your local shelter. Any time you surrender an animal to a shelter, your pet is at risk of being euthanized and that is the harsh reality. Acquiring a pet impulsively, buying a dog as a gift, not properly training and socializing are all reasons why dogs are relinquished and eventually the dog will pay with his/her life. There simply aren’t enough homes to counter all of the unwanted dogs that are filling our shelters and rescues.

I can’t afford to have my pit bull spayed or neutered?

Send us an email and we will help you! The last thing this world needs is another litter of pit bull puppies. Every shelter in RI has pit bulls; most who will never have a second chance. They were once cute puppies that were wanted by a human and as they grew, the novelty wore off. These are the dogs tied in a backyard, chained at an auto body shop, used to fight because their owner has some shortcoming that he must fulfill by having an intimidating dog, starved and left to die in apartments after their owners have moved. So yes, we will help you get your pit bull altered. Now what’s the excuse for not having it done?

I know of a dog that is being abused or neglected, what should I do?

Call someone! We like to think abuse doesn’t happen here, but it does and it doesn’t always air on the news.

A wise man once said “Stand up for something or you’ll fall for anything”. Was he talking to you?
