Nobody's Dog - Benny
Benny with two friends

Many of you remember Benny, the dog caked in his own waste from Providence Animal Control?  Our suspicion was that his owner discarded him like an old newspaper because of his gastrointestinal issue which caused uncontrollable diarrhea. His owner never bothered to bring him to a veterinarian and because of the mess poor Ben was making, his owner dropped him off at a high volume shelter.  Hey after all, it wasn't his dog anymore!

Poor Benny ended up siting in a cage at the PAC where his fate was sealed. Dogs with extensive medical issues rarely get adopted from shelters; compounded with the fact that Ben is a rottie. It was pretty safe to say his days were numbered. No one bothered to figure out why he was so sick.  After all, he was no one's dog! So there he sat for his 10 days, on cement, in his own excrement, waiting for someone to have mercy on him.

Thankfully we were called to see if we had space for him.  We knew within a day that there had to be an underlying medical issue that caused poor Ben to be so thin and not be able to control his bowels.  So the journey began:  doctor appointments, endoscopies, fecal exams, ultrasounds, prescribed foods, steroids, more fecal exams and finally we are now able to control his issue with a home cooked diet and a regimen of vitamins.  Benny took all of this in stride and licked the doctors and techs at every visit.

Benny's diet is pretty costly and we realized early on that he probably would never get adopted.  He wasn't our dog either, but we couldn't give up on this kind soul.  Ben remains a 'sanctuary dog' with his foster mom.  Even though we are not a sanctuary, every once and a while we will come across a dog with a kind heart, a gentle demeanor and everything in the world against him; we will always have a place for dogs like Benny.
